IPOB STORMS CHURCH TELLS OBIANO NO ELECTION IN ANAMBRA, WE WANT REFERENDUM
We can no longer tolerate this
By Vincent Ujumadu
Awka- THE insistence by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, that there would be no election in Anambra State in November this year, took a dangerous dimension Sunday with some youths suspected to be members of IPOB storming St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ekwulobia in Aguata local government area, where Governor Willie Obiano was worshipping and tried to disrupt the service.

An eye witness told Vanguard that the governor had hardly settled down in the church when some youths, including women, who adorned Biafra dresses and waving Biafra flags, besieged the gate of the church, chanting Biafra songs and shouting, “No election in Anambra State “, “We want referendum”, and “No referendum, no election”.

It was gathered that as they forced their way through the gate, the governor’s security men promptly locked up the entrance.
A worshipper at the church said: “As these IPOB members continued their confrontation with the police, their numbers continued to increase. I think they were reinforcing from Onitsha and before we knew what was happening, the area was full of IPOB people.”

However, a member of the governor’s press crew said the governor was not disturbed in any way, adding that despite the presence of the IPOB youths outside the church, he still addressed the congregation towards the end of the service and stayed till the end.

He said: “It is not true that the governor was smuggled out of the church. What happened was that the security men had to stop the agitators at the gate of the church when they started shouting “no election, no election.

“The governor even addressed the issue while speaking to the congregation by assuring Anambra people that there will be election in the state in November.

” He said nobody can stop election in the state and observed that most of the anti- election protesters are not from Anambra State.”

The Anambra State Police Commissioner Mr. Garba Umar who confirmed the incident, warned that the police would no longer tolerate such impunity.
He, however said the intention of the protesters was not to attack the governor.

He said: “You, press people should report this and that is that we will no longer tolerate this impunity from anybody.

“Why should they protest to the church? The church is a place of worship and not a place of protest. It is obvious that they had criminal intention to attack the governor.

” The police had to stop them at the gate. If they had dared my men; it would have been a different story. We can’t watch anybody breach public peace in this state. They should be warned to desist from this impunity”.

About two weeks ago, a group of youths suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra had allegedly disrupted a church function attended by the governorship candidate of the Progressives Peoples Alliance, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo.

The conflict happened at Odoekpe, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.

IPOB had severally maintained that it would not allow the the November 18 poll in the state, unless the Federal Government allowed a referendum to determine a sovereign state for Biafra.

It said Anambra State as the flagship of Igbo held a strategic position in the Biafra struggle that any mistake made in handling Anambra affair in the Biafra cause would have a ripple effect.

A 200 level student of Lead City University, Ibadan, Moshood Owolabi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing his fellow student to death.

In his ruling on Wednesday, Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte of an Ibadan High Court condemned Owolabi to death by hanging for causing the death of one Seun Kolawole, two years ago.

A Physical and Health Education Department student, Owolabi caused the death of Kolawole by stabbing him with a bottle.

The judge said the counsel prosecuting the case, A. Olawale, a Deputy Director in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

He said that the evidence tendered before him showed that the accused committed the offence as charged.

He sentenced him to death by hanging to serve as deterrent to others.

The judge further advised parents to always watch their children to prevent them from misbehaving and causing harm to others.

The prosecutor had earlier told the court that the convict stabbed Kolawole with a broken bottle in the neck, following a misunderstanding between him and the deceased.

He explained that the injury sustained as a result of his action resulted to the death of the victim.

Olawale said that the incident happened on Jan. 12, 2014 at toll-gate area of Ibadan.

He added that the offence was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II Law of Oyo State, 2000.

SEE WHAT ZIDANE SAYS

RIVALS MORE MOTIVATED WHEN FACING MADRID, SAYS ZIDANE
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane believes opponents raise their game when facing the European champions after suffering a shock defeat to Valencia in midweek.

Madrid spurned the chance to extend their one-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table as they conceded twice to a Valencia side languishing in the bottom half of the table in the opening eight minutes to lose 2-1 at Mestalla on Wednesday.

"We always have to improve because it is a long season and for every team we play it is their match of the year," said the Frenchman on Saturday.

"Playing Real Madrid is an extra motivation for them and we have to bear that in mind."

Zidane's men face an even stiffer test on Sunday when they travel to sixth-placed Villarreal, who have conceded just 15 times in 23 La Liga games this season.

"The fact we are facing the team that has conceded the fewest goals in the league will be even more difficult," added Zidane.

"We know they are a very good team, defensively organised and who defend as a unit.

"It is good to play tomorrow after Wednesday because we have the chance to get back to winning ways."

Zidane could hand a first start to Welsh winger Gareth Bale in three months at the Ceramic Stadium.

Bale made an instant impact as a substitute on his return from ankle ligament damage with Real's second goal in a 2-0 win over Espanyol last weekend.

However, he was less effective when introduced for the final 30 minutes at Mestalla.

"He is 100 percent," said Zidane. "He has been fully training with us for several days."

French defender Raphael Varane is Madrid's only injury absentee, so Pepe or Nacho will partner Sergio Ramos in the heart of the defence.

State Houses of Assembly Speakers have described President Muhammadu Buhari and Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo as a good combination of leaders.

They commended Buhari for transmitting power to Osinbajo before he embarked on medical vacation to the United Kingdom, saying his action was in strict adherence to the provisions of the country’s constitution.

The Speakers also hailed Professor Osinbajo on the way and manner he has since handled the affairs of the nation.

This was contained in a communique issued yesterday after their meeting in Abuja.

Reading the communique to newsmen, the chairman, who doubles as Speaker of Kebbi House of Assembly, Abdulmumuni Ismaila Kamba, said the forum was happy on how the Acting President had performed the functions of the number one office so far .

The Speakers, however, condemned the killings and destruction of lives and property in Southern Kaduna, urging Nigerians to live in unity.

They commended security agencies for the roles they play in ensuring peace across the country’s North East where insurgency once held sway.

“The conference has taken cognizance of the concerted efforts made by the security agents throughout the federation with particular reference to the North East geo-political zone in restoring peace and therefore commends their heroism, professionalism and sense of patriotism in all their endeavours,” they said.

NIGERIA EXPECTS N1bn DOLLAR INTERVENTION FUND FOR NORTH-EASTZORRO

Vanguard News / Tony / 2 hours ago

Mr Sani Zorro, Chairman, House Committee on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), has called for transparency and accountability as Nigeria expects one billion dollars humanitarian intervention fund from international donors.

Zorro made the call on Friday in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

According to him, the Nigerian delegation is currently participating in the Global Donor Conference for member countries of the Lake Chad Basin in Oslo, Norway.

Zorro said with the magnitude of the North-East humanitarian crises, which was of global knowledge, “it is an open book that the IDPs and returning refugees need desperate protection and assistance”.

He said that “we should be hopeful for a fruitful deliberation for a one billion dollar intervention fund to scale up the humanitarian assistance in the North-East”.

Zorro said that the funds, when obtained, should be judiciously spent in assisting the vulnerable persons.

“We do hope that Nigeria will be able to generate such intervention as well as resources both in cash and kind because the situation in the North-East is really severe and very dire.

“The Nigerian crises is well known to the global community and we have had sympathisers who include quite a lot of International NGOs that are active in Nigeria, especially in the North-East.

“We at the National Assembly therefore insist that principles of accountability as well as transparency must be respected at all times as all these interventions from foreign counties are not properly tracked.

“Since they are not captured in the Appropriation Act, we as legislators,  in the exercise of our mandate to oversight the executive arm, are unable to track them properly.

“We will continue to insist that best practices are applied when it comes to disbursing and tracking these interventions because they need to be monitored and evaluated properly,’’ Zoro said.

Zorro commended the efforts of the National Emergency Management Agency and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs for doing their  best even in the face of dwindling resources

He said that in spite of donor fatigue, “there is optimism for more donor funds which Nigeria will solicit for during the Syrian global conference scheduled to hold in April.”

The legislator explained that the United Nations, also a  participant at the conference, should be able to solicit assistance on behalf of Nigeria.

Zorro said that the UN was in the best position to do an advocacy on behalf of Nigerian IDPs.

BIBLE TEACHING

            BOLD AS A LION:
"The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1"

Devotion : The scripture has given a comparison between the wicked and the righteous. Christians who are the righteousness of God are to be conscious of who Christ Jesus has made them. They are also to know who Christ Jesus has made the wicked. Jesus Christ has made the righteous as bold as the lion but the wicked to flee when no one is pursuing them. The Christian should never be afraid of the wicked in society because deep inside the wicked is a greater fear to flee from the righteous. Dear beloved, do you feel afraid sometimes? If you do keep declaring, "I am as bold as the lion" and that fear will disappear. Kindly write your views in the comment box.
